Michael Rodgers, the editor at Longman who took the book on and gave it a new lease of life, explains some of the background in his book Publishing and the Advancement of Science. The Star Atlas covers the entire northern and southern sky, with accompanying reference information for amateur astronomers. This time he used the Harvard Revised Photometry catalogue for the positions and brightnesses of the stars.
